Shelby Farmers Market Open Through October 29

Packard Proving Grounds available for classic car storage beginning in Nov.

SHELBY TWP., Mi., Oct. 18, 2010 — The Shelby Farmers Market, open Saturdays from 9 am until 2 pm at the historic Packard Proving Grounds on Van Dyke in Shelby Township, will be open through Oct. 29th, after which it will close for the season.

Along with a cornucopia of local produce, market visitors can enjoy fair-trade, organic coffee, flowers, fresh-baked goodies, jams, salsas, farm-fresh eggs, artisans and live music, as well as cooking demonstrations and recipes inspired by the market’s fall bounty.

The historic Packard Proving Grounds served as a testing facility for various automobiles and aircraft over the years – most notably the Packard Motor Car, from 1928 until 1956.  A stately lodge designed by Albert Kahn in 1928 faces Van Dyke.  The Packard Motor Car Foundation maintains and is restoring a portion of the property, and proceeds from the Shelby Farmers Market help to support the restoration.

Beginning in November, once the market closes, the spacious former engineering building on the grounds will be available to store classic and collector cars during the winter.

“It’s been a wonderful season for the Shelby market, with so many new people discovering it this year,” says market master Mary Anne Demo.  “And we’re thrilled to help generate revenue for the restoration of this great, historic site.”

The Shelby Farmers Market is located at 49965 Van Dyke, between 22 and 23 Mile roads in Shelby Township.  For news, directions or to participate as a vendor at next year’s market, visit www.ShelbyFarmersMarket.com.
