Volunteer at SFM

The Shelby Farmers Market is celebrating its tenth season in 2018 and we would really like to continue to grow and serve the community into the future.  We will need the help of volunteers in order to make this vision a reality.  If you would like to be a part of this effort, please fill out the volunteer form to help get things started.

They say that if you want to get something done, give the task to a busy person, and this is no exception.  There are all sorts of different ways to volunteer, AND it’s much more fun to volunteer doing something that you enjoy.  We hope you’ll consider joining us!

We welcome community members, seniors, students, and anyone who is interested in supporting our efforts.

NOTE TO STUDENTS:  The Packard Proving Grounds is owned by The Packard Motor Car Foundation and is a 501c3 “non‐profit” organization, so we can help you fulfill your community service needs!

We are looking for help in the following areas:

  • Arrive before the market starts (7:30 am)to help setup tents, tables, etc. For tear‐down, arrive by 1:45 to pack things up. This takes about 30‐60 minutes, on average, but many hands make light work!

  • Assist with promotion of the market events and educational programs.

  • Help with special market events. Assist in preparation, promotion, set‐up and execution of events, plus seeking out local businesses as sponsors.

  • Assist with paperwork and records such as applications, etc.

  • Help us conduct customer counts, staff the market information booth, answer questions, provide customer service, and promote the market’s programs and events.  The Market info booth also sells items from the Packard Proving Grounds Gift Shop, and assists with coordinating the historic tours.  This is also a ‘greeter’ position to welcome shoppers to the market and help them locate restroom, vendor info, etc. plus hand out flyers for upcoming events.

    If a vendor needs a restroom break, it’s helpful to have a volunteer who can cover their space until they return.

  • Take digital photographs at the market and market events to be used in the marketing/media campaigns for the market, including event programs, newsletters, displays, social media and website.

  • We want to grow what is available for sale at the farmers market, so it’s helpful to have volunteers on the look out for new products and invite vendors to visit the market and consider joining us.  For example if we got a lot of requests for mushrooms, and we don’t currently have any farmers selling them, this would be a great research project for a volunteer to see if we could source a vendor to bring these to the market.
